Do you slow down just before reaching a speed camera? New speed cameras are set to be installed to catch drivers harshly braking before reaching the speeding camera and for up to 1km after passing the cameras.
A system developed by Road Angel uses multiple cameras and sensors to assess whether drivers have harshly braked. This technology was trialled in early 2020, and after a successful pilot, these cameras have been officially set up in the Navarra region of northeast Spain.
The speed cameras would be positioned to detect those who brake before reaching the camera. Subsequently, there will be a mobile device placed a considerable distance away (which can be over a kilometre) after the speed camera. This device will catch drivers who have sped up after passing the speed cameras. Those caught speeding, braking harshly before the camera, or accelerating after passing the cameras may receive a substantial fine and points on their licence.
These cameras aim to encourage drivers to practice better safety on the roads and monitor their speed. Gary Digva, the founder of Road Angels, has said, 'These devices will catch and penalise more speeding motorists, encouraging more drivers to stick to legal limits and improve road safety.'
This development follows the news that one in four fatal collisions occurs due to speeding on UK roads. This means that over 2,500 people are seriously injured every year due to excessive speeds.
It has been reported that someone is injured on UK roads on average every 16 minutes, and these measures will help reduce this number.
